After spending a day in Salzburg, the next day saw us covering two very different locations, the first of being Eisriesenwelt - a large limestone ice cave located high the Alps above the small town of Werfen, about 40 Km outside of the city.
While I have no photos of the cave's interiors due to restrictions against photography, I did take a number of shots on the longer-than-expected walk that we had as we headed up to the cave (And back down). With the weather being rainy once more, the walk was a fairly wet one, as we had to walk through the low clouds for most of the way up. The supposedly spectacular view from the path (and the mid-way cable car ride) was also completely shrouded.
The cloud lifted slightly by the time we were done touring the caves, and we got a glimpse of some of the views that we had missed on the way up. That was short lived though, as the clouds returned again soon after.
Despite the long wet walk, I still found the cave to be a very worthwhile visit. One just has to ensure that weather proof and warm clothes are handy, even in the summer months, not just for the weather outside, but also because the caves are near freezing year-round. There is also a lot of stairs once you get into the cave itself, so wear comfortable footwear, and be prepared for a fairly strenuous experience.
The next place we headed to offered a completely different experience from the cave visit, so head on to the next post.
